The archive is a crit\u00adi\u00adcal inter\u00adven\u00adtion, chal\u00adleng\u00ading dom\u00adi\u00adnant his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal nar\u00adra\u00adtives, which tend to down\u00adplay his\u00adto\u00adries of colo\u00adnial\u00adism, slav\u00adery, and their lega\u00adcy. West\u00adern Euro\u00adpean coun\u00adtries such as the Nether\u00adlands, the UK, Spain, and France were major colo\u00adnial empires involved in the transat\u00adlantic slave trade. Oth\u00ader (Western-)European coun\u00adtries such as Ger\u00admany and Bel\u00adgium became major impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal pow\u00aders after the abol\u00adish\u00adment of the transat\u00adlantic slave trade. Although these his\u00adto\u00adries played a major role in the devel\u00adop\u00adment of Euro\u00adpean nation-states and metrop\u00ado\u00adles such as Lon\u00addon, Ams\u00adter\u00addam, Berlin, and Paris, these parts of his\u00adto\u00adry are often under\u00adex\u00adposed in pub\u00adlic mem\u00ado\u00adry, arts, and edu\u00adca\u00adtion\u00adal insti\u00adtu\u00adtions. Many of these metrop\u00ado\u00adles have become \u00bbmajor\u00adi\u00adty-minor\u00adi\u00adty\u00ab cities, cities in which there is no longer one dom\u00adi\u00adnant eth\u00adnic group but a mosa\u00adic of peo\u00adple with dif\u00adfer\u00adent cul\u00adtur\u00adal back\u00adgrounds and dif\u00adfer\u00adent migra\u00adtion his\u00adto\u00adries. How\u00adev\u00ader, their his\u00adto\u00adries are often not part of dom\u00adi\u00adnant his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal nar\u00adra\u00adtives, and they are seen as dis\u00adcon\u00adnect\u00aded and unre\u00adlat\u00aded from the cities in which they live. By devel\u00adop\u00ading and delv\u00ading into \u00bbalter\u00adna\u00adtive archives,\u00ab how\u00adev\u00ader, we can find sur\u00adpris\u00ading (hi)stories of the pres\u00adence, con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adtions, and eman\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtion strug\u00adgles of dif\u00adfer\u00adent groups of peo\u00adple.
