The pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader and author Nico\u00adla Zolin doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00aded the rise and fall of the city of Riace and its for\u00admer may\u00ador, who wel\u00adcomed refugees with open arms, cre\u00adat\u00ading a spe\u00adcial kind of utopia. For\u00admer may\u00ador Domeni\u00adco \u00bbMim\u00admo\u00ab Lucano of the south\u00adern Ital\u00adian munic\u00adi\u00adpal\u00adi\u00adty of Riace was co-founder of the asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion Cit\u00adt\u00e0 Futura\u2014City of the Future. In col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion with aid orga\u00adni\u00adza\u00adtions, he took in refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, Pales\u00adtine, and Lebanon. With this came state sub\u00adsi\u00addies that were then also invest\u00aded in the village\u2019s infra\u00adstruc\u00adture, which\u2014many today believe\u2014would like\u00adly have died out with\u00adout the new res\u00adi\u00addents. And so, togeth\u00ader with the locals, aban\u00addoned hous\u00ades were repaired. The new\u00adcom\u00aders were also intro\u00adduced to local tra\u00addi\u00adtions of glass mak\u00ading, ceram\u00adics, and embroi\u00addery. But from the begin\u00adning, there was resis\u00adtance to what was seen as an idio\u00adsyn\u00adcrat\u00adic approach, which final\u00adly led to the project\u2019s col\u00adlapse a few years ago. Lucano was accused of mal\u00adprac\u00adtice, abuse of his posi\u00adtion, and had to leave Riace. In the mean\u00adtime, how\u00adev\u00ader, he\u2019s back forg\u00ading new plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A view of Riace Sopra, a place from which peo\u00adple had moved away for decades to find work in the north of the coun\u00adtry or North\u00adern Europe. The fate of the vil\u00adlage changes with the fugi\u00adtives that the for\u00admer may\u00ador Domeni\u00adco Lucano has placed in the emp\u00adty hous\u00ades of the vil\u00adlage. The for\u00admer teacher Domeni\u00adco Lucano became may\u00ador of Riace in 2004 and is estab\u00adlish\u00ading a cul\u00adture of welcome\u2014a cel\u00ade\u00adbrat\u00aded inte\u00adgra\u00adtion and devel\u00adop\u00adment project. Togeth\u00ader with local res\u00adi\u00addents, he found\u00aded the coop\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtive \u00bbCit\u00adt\u00e0 Futura\u00ab\u2014City of the Future, in order to take a stand against the eco\u00adnom\u00adic exploita\u00adtion and social exclu\u00adsion of refugees, while at the same time attract\u00ading more tourists to the region. \u00a9 Nico\u00adla Zolin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
It is said that over the years more than 6,000 refugees from about 20 nations have come through Riace. Only a few stayed, many want\u00aded or had to move on.
