The City Plaza Hotel in Athens\u2019 Vic\u00adto\u00adria dis\u00adtrict stood emp\u00adty for a long time. In April 2016, an ini\u00adtia\u00adtive, togeth\u00ader with strand\u00aded refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, Syr\u00adia, and many oth\u00ader places, occu\u00adpied the build\u00ading. They trans\u00adformed the 126-room ex-hotel into a res\u00adi\u00adden\u00adtial com\u00adplex and man\u00adaged it them\u00adselves. In doing so, the project is a demon\u00adstra\u00adtion of the prac\u00adtice of eco\u00adnom\u00adic and polit\u00adi\u00adcal sol\u00adi\u00addar\u00adi\u00adty with refugees. Thus, it was also a cen\u00adter for the fight against racism, bor\u00adders, repres\u00adsive migra\u00adtion poli\u00adcies, and social exclu\u00adsion. After thir\u00adty-six months, the exper\u00adi\u00adment came to an end in 2019. Despite the project\u2019s brevi\u00adty, this build\u00ading in cen\u00adtral Athens, as well as the activ\u00adi\u00adties that unfold\u00aded there, rep\u00adre\u00adsent crit\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly impor\u00adtant top\u00adics to all of us\u2014and not only in times of crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are City Plaza is a project of the French pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader Claude Somot and the Chi\u00adnese pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader Xiao\u00adfu Wang. For a peri\u00adod of two weeks they lent cam\u00aderas to 18 res\u00adi\u00addents of the squat\u00adted hotel aged between 8 and 38 years. The City Plaza Hotel in Athens was occu\u00adpied by activists between 2016 and 2019 to pro\u00advide safe and dig\u00adni\u00adfied accom\u00admo\u00adda\u00adtion for peo\u00adple on the run. The self-man\u00adaged project was financed exclu\u00adsive\u00adly from pri\u00advate funds and was sup\u00adport\u00aded by sol\u00adi\u00addar\u00adi\u00adty. With\u00adin a very short time, it estab\u00adlished itself as a cen\u00adter for the fight against social exclu\u00adsion and racism.
